Middlebury’s record-breaking season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to Trinity of Texas in an NCAA Semifinal game played in San Antonio on Toyota Field. The Panthers finish the season with a school-record 17 wins against just two losses and three ties. They also see their school-best unbeaten streak snapped at 19 games. Trinity improves to 25-0-2 and will take on William Smith in the NCAA title game on Saturday.
The first half began with Middlebury attacking directly into a stiff wind. Jamie Soroka had a good look on the left side 13 minutes into the game, but her shot from 15 yards out was stopped by Trinity keeper, Devan Osegueda.
Trinity jumped on the board first at the 18:30 mark with a goal from Michelle Lanier. Emily Jorgens had some space on the left side in the box and found Lanier on the right. Her shot at the far post was partially redirected by Panther keeper Elizabeth Foody, but continued into the back of the net, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Middlebury now found themselves trailing for the first time since October 26th against Wesleyan.
Middlebury’s Moria Sloan saw her shot in the 31st minute saved by Osegueda, while on the other end of the field a minute later, a Trinity shot by Emily Jorgen’s from 22 yards out went wide left.
The Panthers tied the game at the 33:33 mark with the 17th of the season from Scarlett Kirk. Hannah Robinson sent the ball forward to Adrianna Gilder on the right side, who quickly sent a cross to the middle that was redirected into the left side of the net by Kirk from eight yards out. The goal extended Kirk’s post-season scoring streak to four games, giving her six in the last four contests.
Trinity gained a 2-1 advantage just 5:40 into the second half. Kelsey Falcone sent a low hard cross from the right goal line area that Foody was able to temporarily smother. The ball squirted loose to Hannah Hommel, who chipped a shot into the left side of an open net. The tally marked the first time this season the Panthers have given up more than one goal in a match.
Middlebury came back with some pressure, as a nice ball sent into the box by Kirk in the 53rd minute was punched out by Osegueda. Five minutes later, Kirk’s blast from 25 yards out was briefly mishandled before Osegueda made the save.
Trinity nearly increased its lead in the 84th minute, but Falcone just missed a good look from 12 yards on a cross from Hommel.
Middlebury had a good opportunity to tie the game a minute later, as a Tiger defender tried to settle a ball sent into the box by Middlebury. Gildner was there and took a quick step before ripping a shot from the 18 that was stopped by Osegueda.
The Panthers had one last chance with 1:23 remaining and a free kick from 35 yards out. Julia Favorito sent the ball into the box, but Gildner’s header went wide.
Trinity outshot Middlebury 16-10 in the game, while the Panthers held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Foody finished with a pair of saves in goal, while Osegueda made five stops for the Tigers. Kirk and Robinson were named to the all-tournament team.
